Sheds, Pints, and 1971: The Year I Was Born (and a Campaign Began!)

Nothing sparks creativity quite like a personal journey, particularly when it involves a satisfying pint of ale and the familiar pub shed. Today, I opened an email from CAMRA—the Campaign for Real Ale—and was hit with a truly top-notch coincidence: they’re celebrating their 55th anniversary, having been founded back in 1971.

Indeed, that year coincidentally marks my birth!

Usually, I’m not a fan of cosmic alignment, but something about this resonated with me. Back in ’71, while a developing Andrew Wilcox was causing a bit of bother for his parents (I was born 3 months premature in October), a small group of mates set out to fight for better beer and protect Britain’s brewing heritage & pubs. What a cracking year to be born—a year of championing the real thing.

The CAMRA email detailed their brand-new ‘1971 collection’, featuring designs inspired by their history and love of cask ale. They have a “Keeping it Real Since ’71” design and a “Cask of 71″ sweatshirt. ” The whole concept is a brilliant tribute to their roots, a celebration of heritage, and a nod to a truly pivotal year for pub culture.

CAMRA is considered one of the most successful consumer organisations across Europe. Founded by four real ale enthusiasts back in 1971, today we represent beer drinkers and pub-goers across the UK.

Our vision is to have quality real ale, cider and perry and thriving pubs in every community. Our mission is to promote and advocate:

  • the production, availability and consumption of quality real ale, cider and perry
  • pubs and clubs as social centres and part of the UK’s cultural heritage
  • the benefits of responsible social drinking

Which, naturally, led my thoughts directly to the shed.

If CAMRA has the ‘Cask of 71,’ maybe Shed of the Year needs a ‘SHED BORN OF 71’ collection!
