The Real Cider Shed: Serving Quality in Your Garden Sanctuary
Over twenty years running readersheds.co.uk and judging the Shed of the Year competition, I’ve watched thousands of sheds transform from basic timber structures into genuine sanctuaries. But I’ve noticed something telling: sheddies obsess over every detail—roofing tiles, insulation, the perfect interior finish, yet often fill their bars with mass-produced cider that doesn’t deserve the name.
That ends now. This is about bringing the same integrity to what you drink as you bring to building the space itself.
The 35% Problem: Why Most “Cider” Isn’t Really Cider
Here’s a fact that should alarm every shed enthusiast: by UK law, a drink only needs 35% apple juice to be labelled as cider. The rest? Water, sugar, concentrate. Compare that to Germany (50%) or the US (also 50%). We’re being left behind, and frankly, we’re accepting it.
Think about it this way: you’d never buy the cheapest, thinnest timber for your shed’s frame, slap on a coat of paint, and call it sturdy. Yet that’s exactly what happens with mass-produced cider. It looks the part on the shelf. But the foundation isn’t there.
As sheddies, we value authenticity. We spend weeks researching the best build methods, arguing over ventilation systems, perfecting every angle. We build things that last. When we step into our sheds our spaces shouldn’t the drinks we serve reflect that same commitment?

Three Steps to a Proper Cider Shed
1. Start with Watertightness (As Always)
Before you even think about stocking the bar, get your shed structure sound. A damp shed ruins cider, atmosphere, and everything in between. Don’t rush the building phase, get the fundamentals right first. Once the roof is watertight and the walls are solid, then you can think about the vibe.
Choose your aesthetic and stick with it: rustic orchard barn with exposed beams and reclaimed apple-crate shelving, or a sleek modern cider bar. It doesn’t matter which, as long as it feels intentional. Your shed should reflect you, not a magazine spread.
2. Stock Real Cider: Support the Makers
This is the crucial bit. Around three-quarters of the UK’s estimated 480 active cider producers have launched since 2000. These are the people working with local orchards, planting heritage apple varieties, and pressing fresh fruit, not concentrate.
When you stock your shed with real cider (look for “Not From Concentrate” on the label), you’re not just buying a better drink. You’re voting with every pint for the survival of traditional orchards. Over 2,000 acres of cider orchards have disappeared in the last decade alone. These aren’t just fields, they’re government-designated priority habitats, vital for insects, birds, and biodiversity.
3. Make Your Shed Tell the Story
Lean into the theme. Use reclaimed timber from old fruit crates. Decorate seasonally, the harvest in autumn, the blossom in spring. Create a space that feels like a refuge, somewhere mates want to be. When you serve a drink that’s genuinely crafted, it tastes better in a space that feels equally authentic.
Why This Matters
It’s tempting to think one pint in one shed doesn’t move the needle. But it does. Every choice to drink real cider directly supports orchards that might otherwise disappear. It’s a small act with real weight.
And isn’t that the entire philosophy of a pub shed? Autonomy. Craft. Controlling your environment and refusing to compromise on quality. That ethos should extend from the walls to the glass.
Join the Movement
This month, I’m challenging every cider-drinking sheddie to upgrade. Find a local, independent producer. Stock your shed bar with real cider. When you take that first proper sip, tell us about it. Tag the maker, share your shed, show what a commitment to quality looks like.
There’s also a bigger push on: we’re campaigning for the minimum juice content for cider to rise from 35% to 50%. The US, Germany, and the EU are already there. It’s time the UK caught up. You can contact your MP through the CAMRA e-lobby in about two minutes, it matters.
Building a pub shed is a journey in craftsmanship. Whether you’re creating a snooker bar or a quiet old-school boozer, your space is yours to define. Let’s make sure when we toast to that hard work, we’re raising a glass of the real stuff.
Until next time, get that shed watertight and go find the good cider.
