Combining Metal and Wood: A Look at Jimmy DiResta’s Custom Mailbox

While we in the UK are mostly used to the satisfying clack of a letterbox flap in the front door or the dog attacking the metal cage to alert us that we have mail.

What we think of when we think of an outside postbox

Our cousins across the pond have a different tradition. The curbside mailbox. Often, these are flimsy plastic or thin tin affairs, but when legendary maker Jimmy DiResta decides his postie needs more room, he doesn’t just head to the local DIY store. He heads to the shed, or his amazing workshop, in this instance.

In his latest video, Jimmy tackles a common modern problem—the “Amazon/UPS squeeze.” With more of us ordering parcels than ever, a standard letter slot just doesn’t cut it. Jimmy’s solution is a custom-built, oversized mailbox that looks part-treasure chest, part-whisky barrel, and entirely indestructible.

Transatlantic Shed Envy

For a UK audience, the sheer scale of this project is a bit of a culture shock. We rarely have the driveway space (or the planning permission!) for a standalone structure on a post. However, look past the “mailbox” label, and what you see is a masterclass in hybrid construction that any sheddie can appreciate.

Jimmy starts with 16-gauge steel, using his FastCut CNC plasma table to create the structural ribs. For those of us who spend our weekends with a jigsaw and a prayer, watching a plasma cutter slice through steel like butter is pure “maker porn.” But it’s the combination of materials that really makes this project sing.

Steel Meets Sapele

The “barrel” aesthetic is achieved by cladding the steel frame with Sapele wood staves. Sapele is a fantastic choice for the outdoors—durable, rot-resistant, and possessing a deep, rich grain that looks incredible under a few coats of marine varnish.

Jimmy’s technique of “stitch welding” the frame and then carefully gluing and taping the wood slats provides a great lesson in handling expansion and contraction. Even if you aren’t building a mailbox, this method is perfect for creating curved garden furniture, tool chests, or even decorative cladding for your shed bar.

The “DiResta” Details

What elevates a project from “DIY” to “Art” are the personal touches. Jimmy incorporates a silhouette of the “Tin Man” from the Wizard of Oz to hold the house numbers. It’s whimsical, sturdy, and serves a functional purpose.

Our favourite detail, however, has to be the handle. In true sheddie fashion, Jimmy repurposes an old S-shaped wrench, welding it to the front bezel. It’s a nod to the mechanical roots of the workshop and a reminder that the best components are often already sitting in your scrap bin.

Why This Matters for UK Makers

You might be thinking, “I don’t need a letterbox on a stick.” But look at the finished product. It’s essentially a weather-proof, high-security, aesthetically beautiful storage pod.

In the UK, we could easily adapt this design for:

  • A Secure Parcel Box: Placed by the garden gate to keep deliveries dry and safe from “porch pirates.”
  • An Allotment Locker: A stylish place to keep small hand tools and seeds.
  • Garden Lighting: A smaller version of this barrel design would make for a stunning outdoor light bollard.

Final Thoughts

Watching Jimmy work is a reminder that the shed is a place of infinite possibility. It’s not just about fixing a broken chair; it’s about looking at a mundane object—like a mailbox—and asking, “How can I make this better?”

Whether it’s 10 degrees below zero in Jimmy’s New York workshop or a drizzly Tuesday in Derbyshire, the spirit remains the same: get in the shed, fire up the tools, and build something that will last.
