Welcome to the Half-Giant Hut: A Harry Potter Fan’s Dream Tiny Home in Washington!
Every Harry Potter fan dreams of receiving their Hogwarts acceptance letter, but for Mamie Gail, she brought the magic to life by building her own slice of the wizarding world right in her backyard! Located in Toledo, Washington, Mamie and her family spent seven years transforming a small plot of land into a fully immersive, 650-square-foot replica of Rubeus Hagrid’s iconic hut.
This wasn’t just a simple construction project; it was a passion project that pushed the boundaries of creativity, design, and even budget, all in the pursuit of bringing joy and a little bit of magic to others.
A Half-Giant House for Half-Giant Hearts
Mamie Gail, the mastermind behind the Half-Giant Hut, openly admits her huge fandom for Harry Potter. She fell in love with Hagrid, the gentle giant, and his kindness—a character trait she found relatable. “Hagrid’s Hut is iconic,” she explains. She had a clear plan, thanks to the established design in the movies, but executing the vision required immense dedication.
The first builder Mamie approached was initially uninterested in a small, 650-square-foot cabin—until she mentioned it was Hagrid’s Hut. “He said, ‘I’m in!'” she recalls.
The exterior of the tiny home is immediately recognisable. Built with rough-hewn stone and topped with conical roofs, the structure perfectly captures the rustic, slightly haphazard charm of the original dwelling found on the edge of the Forbidden Forest. Mamie’s commitment to authenticity is clear from the moment you approach the enormous, distressed wooden door.
The door, originally intended to be eight feet tall, was ultimately upgraded to nine feet to better suit the hut’s half-giant inhabitant. Mamie personally oversaw the process of “beating up” the brand new, custom-made door using chains, hammers, and nails to give it a rugged, mediaeval appearance. This level of detail goes beyond the door. For example, the rain chain, which is just a bucket hanging from a chain, adds to the rustic look. She got a lot of the things she used from Vinted or Facebook Marketplace.
Stepping Inside: Big Furniture and Wizarding Artifacts
Upon entering the hut, you are immediately transported into a cosy, cluttered, and oversized space—exactly as Hagrid would have kept it. The interior walls are clad in warm wood, and the high, beamed ceiling (complete with a decorative roof structure) is adorned with ropes, nets, lanterns, and various found objects, lending an air of accumulated history.
One of the most striking features is the furniture—all built by Mamie herself, with the help of her tall brother for scale. She laughs about the experience: “The first thing that happens when you walk in the door is you just laugh because it’s so big, and you feel like a child again.”
She built the enormous sofa and chairs, which dwarf her 5’4” frame. The main bed is a “mattress and a half” wide (108 inches long!) to accommodate a giant’s sleeping habits, requiring custom sheets and quilts. Even the dining chairs and table are comically tall, forcing adult guests to climb up or use a foot bar to sit comfortably.
The central feature of the hut is the large stone fireplace, complete with a perpetually glowing, but electric, fire. In the hearth, a cauldron bubbles, concealing an iridescent black dragon egg—a replica of Norbert, the Norwegian Ridgeback. Mamie made the egg by putting paper mache over a plastic base and painting it with iridescent paint.
Scattered throughout the hut are meticulously curated props and finds that enhance the illusion:
- Secondhand Finds: Most of the decor, including old pots, books, and trinkets, was sourced from thrift stores and estate sales and some from Vinted.
- Magical Artifacts: Look closely, and you’ll spot a Time-Turner hourglass, copies of the Daily Prophet and The Quibbler, and even Mandrake earmuffs in the greenhouse.
- The Dragon: Perched high on the ceiling beams is a custom-made dragon head, one of the few items Mamie admitted to splurging on because she “wasn’t able to find a discount dragon.”
Beyond the main living space, the small bathroom is outfitted with a high-cistern flush toilet and a showerhead so high that you would need to stand on your own head to reach it, maintaining the giant-sized theme.
Beyond the Hut: The Rest of the Wizarding Village
The Half-Giant Hut is not Mamie’s only contribution to her personal Harry Potter-themed resort. The property features several other recognisable structures:
- The Flying Ford Anglia: Parked outside the hut is a light-blue Ford Anglia, famously used by Ron Weasley to rescue Harry in The Chamber of Secrets. Mamie found the car on eBay for just $3,500, then repainted and refurbished it. It still features its licence plate: LEV1OSA.
- Professor Sprout’s Greenhouse: An ordinary metal-and-glass greenhouse has been converted into the Herbology classroom, complete with shelving and, crucially, a Mandrake nicknamed “Mandy” screaming from a giant pot.
- The Knight Bus: Perhaps the most ambitious project, a purple, triple-decker 1966 Routemaster bus (the “RML” designation, or Routemaster Long) serves as additional lodging. Mamie had to carefully plan the route to the property due to its immense height (14 feet, 2 inches) to avoid bridges and overpasses.
- Hogsmeade Station: Next to the Knight Bus is a modern shed stylised as Hogsmeade Station, complete with a red phone booth (from which one can call the Ministry of Magic!) and a Hogsmeade Station sign.
A Nod to Tiny Homes and Sheds
Mamie’s project is a perfect example of how small structures can harbour huge dreams. Her unique, themed building embodies the spirit of self-built, imaginative spaces, reminiscent of the best entries we see in competitions like Shed of the Year.
Over the years, the Shed of the Year competition—a UK-based event celebrating unique and imaginative garden sheds—has showcased many incredible structures that share Mamie’s whimsical and personal approach to building:
- The In-Home Pubs: Many entries focus on creating functional, themed spaces, such as elaborate pubs built in sheds.
- Creative Conversions: From sheds converted into astronomical observatories to writers’ retreats, these small spaces are often intensely customised, just like the Half-Giant Hut.
- The Whimsical and Themed: Structures inspired by history, nature, or pop culture often stand out, demonstrating that building a shed can be a deeply creative and passionate pursuit, mirroring Mamie’s tribute to the Harry Potter universe.
Mamie’s dedication to detail, coupled with her DIY spirit (building oversized furniture in a single week!), truly sets the Half-Giant Hut apart. It’s a remarkable testament to the passion of fandom and the magic that can be created when you decide to build your dreams.
