Utility companies dug the equivalent of two million trenches in England and Wales during streetworks last year.

Carrying out streetwork on such services as water, gas and electricity, companies dug an average of 12,500 holes in 2007 in each local authority’s area.

The number of holes equated to one for every 200 yards of local authority road, a report from the Asphalt Industry Alliance (AIA) said.
