Man finds live grenade in shed when knocking it down

Welcome Sheddie, this blog is about sheds! You can share your shed, or view other people's sheds. If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to our RSS feed.

A man today told of his narrow escape after finding a live grenade in a shed he was about to knock down.

Bomb disposal experts were called to Paul Fittock’s home in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire to detonate the Second World War device he found gathering dust on a shelf.

Mr Fittock, 33, only discovered the device in rafters of the old wooden shed because he was carrying out a final inspection before sledgehammering it down.

Mr Fittock, who bought the nearby house six months ago, had just gained planning permission to raze the dilapidated building to the ground.

RAF officers placed the device in a metal box and took it to a quarry to be detonated. Police briefly sealed the road off for safety.

The computer engineer told the Gloucestershire Echo: “There was no mistaking what it was so I got out of there quickly and called the police.

“If I hadn’t seen it and started knocking the building down it could have easily dropped to the floor. Who knows what could have happened?”

Next door neighbour Amanda Wiltshire said: “It’s the most exciting thing to have happened since I’ve lived here!”

Just sheds : Scouthouse

A lovely American shed today from Scout and Matt from Portland, OR

it even has the computer generated image of what it should look like.

generated shed

All the windows were scored at bargain prices from different people on Craigslist, and we then designed the shed around them. The two of us built it by ourselves, from the ground up. Thirty feet down a path, painted to match the house, electric heat, second- hand laminate flooring, different colored windows on all four sides, fully insulated, rain barrel to collect roof runoff.

You think you have problems getting your shed up

Reader Pamela from Michigan U.S.A says

Here in DeWitt, Michigan U.S.A. we have a rule prohibiting sheds. Some people have built sheds and the homeowners association is suing them in court to make them take the sheds down. How pathetic is that?

Sheds were banned in this area near Lake Geneva in DeWitt, MI (not to be confused with a larger place called Lake Geneva in Wisconsin). The developeer who set the rules decided that there could only be two structures on each property–a house and attached garage. It makes no sense to me. Some people have their lawn care and gardening equipment in their garages and then park their cars in the driveway.

If only we hadn’t dumped that tea into Boston Harbor–we could all be British and we could all have sheds!

Do you have any issues or comments about rules and planning issues?

Shed build

Mike has said they have a few other build projects in the pipeline, including a 3 walled shelter.

- to use as a shelter when we’re working in the wood and it starts raining
- a place to leave tools and stuff under cover, high value stuff in a locked steel box, the rest just loose or in a wooden box.

One to keep an eye on I think and of course Hopefully they will share their sheds like the rest of our sheddies.

Dodgy DIY takes a year off your life

Not sure about you sheddies who have built your own sheds I think your shedlife adds to your life, but one of those surveys says this

Householders spend almost a year of their lives carrying out home repairs, even though many admit they make costly mistakes, start jobs they never finish or injure themselves, according to a new report today.

A survey of almost 1,500 adults by Yellow Pages showed that one in three had started a DIY job they did not finish, or which went wrong.

Fewer than one in five said they enjoyed DIY work, often attempting decorating, tiling or even plastering so they could save money.

Some of those questioned admitted their homes had been devalued by botched DIY jobs and 2% said they had left their partners because of DIY disasters.

Clodagh Ward, consumer development director at Yell, publisher of Yellow Pages directories, said: “It’s really surprising to see the scale of home improvements that people are prepared to tackle.
“Sometimes it may prove cheaper to call upon the skilled trades people for the trickier jobs in the first instance.”

Ideas for Moroccan shed, look at bus stop

I saw this yesterday, but been unable to get find any good photos.

Any from This is cornwall.

A bus stop in Cornwall almost makes passengers hope their bus is running late as they wait in Moroccan splendour.

The bus stop in the picturesque town of Fowey on the south coast of Cornwall has a distinctly exotic air about it.

Instead of plastic seats and scrawled graffiti, bus passengers are treated to cushions, curtains - and even potted plants and flowers while waiting for the bus to arrive.

This special bus stop benefits from an annual makeover and this year has been transformed into a Moroccan-style lounge.

Resident Jane Tinsley asked the local council if she could take the bus stop on as a project several years ago and has repeatedly been inspired to come up with new creations.
