We have just aquired a 10×12 wooden shed.

We erected it yesterday after having treated in with a (rather pricey) wood stain, on every inch of panel!

The roof is waterproof and the shed sits approx 12inch off the ground on steel sleepers, if that what you’d call them. and inside joints have been sealed!

First test came about 11pm last night when we had a downpour, not the worst one lately but still rather heavy. We went out to check.

Now heres the problem, the rain was falling at an angle and hitting the left hand side of the shed, upon inspecting the inside, all of the wall on the laft hand side and back were soaked! not ‘puddle’ wet, but pretty much soaked as well as the corners on the floor…

The top 3 panels of each wall were dry still, as the roof overhangs slightly, but where the rain was hitting it, it was well and truely drowned…

Now, this is a new shed, made just this week, the wood was still seeping a bit of sap! but it had been treated at the place of pruchase, and also stained here…

So i’m wondering what has caused this, we think maybe its because its the first time its been rained on, the wood will expand then dry and seal itself, is this correct?

problem we have is, the shed is having electrics fitted today, and also its going to house animals…we cannot afford it to leak!

anyone have any ideas as to whats happening, this is 13mm wood panels, very well built, didn’t expect it at all Frown

thanks in advance!

You mention you used a “stain” to coat the wood, that’s not necessarily water proof it might just make the wood look good.

Normally waterproofing specifically says that on the tin, look for things like “Wax enriched” or “Water repellent”. The rain should form beads and run down the side of the shed like a good waterproof coat. It’s not normally expensive, approx £10 per 5L which should be enough for a couple of coats on a 10×12 shed.
