The dust has hardly settled and I'm already thinking seriously about Shed Week 2009.  Face it, it needs to be a really special shed to win the coverted Shed of the Year title and I'm struggling for ideas, but I might be on to something:  I want my allotment site to have a site hut so we can get together for tea and biscuits and have somewhere to sell seeds and stuff and I think we could have some fun building it together.  And it needs to cost next to nothing to build because allotmenteering has to be affordable.  So what I'm thinking about is a variation on the geodesic dome built from pallets.  Pallets are a great source of free timber, but it comes in short length, but the beauty of the geodesic dome is that it's built entirely from a triangulated framework of short lenghts!  Biggest problem at the moment is that the The Dictatorship of the Air that manage the allotments won't currently allow a site hut, but I'm working on that.

If you'd like some inspiration check out this dome site, and if you have some killer ideas for world shed domination do please post them.

I can;t wait for the new entries, but there are some great sheds that did not get the votes last time..

of course all sheds apart from the winner are elidible to enter Shed of the Year 2009 in fact you dont need to do anything, apart from update the info and add a few fresh pictures.

Myabe the allotment associ website can help in getting a site hut, as every allotment needs one.

I've been trying to visualise what a geodesic dome would look like and while sketches are helpful there's nothing like a 3-D model, so I made this cheap and cheerful model the other day.

It's a bit lumpy because I was experimenting.  Framing a door nicely so that it doesn't look like it's been stuck on as an afterthought is a tricky business.  The particularly lumpy bit on the left is what I'm thinking about for the door.

Well I wish you luck with your shed dreams - our allotment site has recently lifted the ban on sheds and so I am now the proud owner of an old one donated by an ex neighbour from hiks garden - however plans are afoot to rebuild a new shed with attached greenhouse (all from scratch). Unfortunately our site has some fairly strict rules on what is permitted but I'll be bending these as far as I can to fit in with what I want. Laughing

I love the idea of a Geodesic dome - ever been to The Eden Project? Truly awesome domes there!

Hi Morgan, have you seen the shed Uncle Wilco is currently featuring on the ShedBlog? It's a very nice shed/greenhouse. I'm pleased you can now have a shed on your allotment. I'm sure there's a whole circle of hell just for petty allotment managers.

I'm familiar with the Eden Project's domes but I've never been there. I'm finding that a lot of people have visited so they understand when I say the shed will be like a biodome, but then they think it'll be like a greenhouse so I have to say it's more like a shed. I made another model to work out more details of the door opening. This one's out of bar-b-que sticks.

Bit of a setback.  Lot of a setback actually.  The council have killed the shed project dead.  I do have a garden workshop that I need to be building so that will now get some attention, but it won't be Shed of the Year material so I'm a bit gutted.
