I get a lot of people emailing me asking questions about how to build a shed, so lets clear one thing up

Iam a shed fancier and the wossname of readersheds.co.uk I don’t have any DIY skills, knowledge or aptitude for building, I wish I did, but I love the idea of sheds, the finished product and the lifestyle that a great shed brings, and of course I love all your sheds! but I do know a man who knows of the Secrets of shed building, he goes by the name of John Coupe, he’s a Civil engineer with …

I have a garden on a slope of about 30 degrees. What is the best way to build a shed on it? Should I try to flaten it, use MetaPosts, use railway sleepers etc. I should add that the site for the shed is a long way from the road and it takes a lot of effort to carry anything up the garden!

Hi, a common question for shed builders.

You have highlighted the two possible solutions;

i)The first is to start excavating into the slope and building out to create a level platform.
ii)The second is to build up off the slope and create a deck-like structure.

The first solution involves a lot of heavy ground work and possibly building a retaining wall. The second solution is a lot lighter weight and so could be more suitable for you as you mention that the site is a long way from the road.

I would recommend using railway sleepers to spread the load from the foundation. Meta-posts have a pointed end and when you load them up as you build the shed they may drive further into the ground causing the shed to lean!

I have a page here
which may help you visualise the two solutions.

Hi all, I am new to the forum.

I am in the process of building a shed - recycled our older & smaller shed into a new location, size and style. I have been keeping a blog in the construction details: http://greengateranchremodel.blogspot.com/search/label/Garden%20Shed

Here is a picture showing the current progress. I just completed painting the main areas of the exterior.

Hope it's OK to be a Yank on the forum (West Coast: Oregon) - my mum's a Brit, hence my affinity for gardens and sheds…
