Gifts for that shed dweller or shed worker

A lot of sheddies have got computers in their sheds now…. be it for shed working or just for looking at readersheds and shedblog.co.uk

Anyway this festive season why not buy your “on the grid” sheddie something useful.

Those people over at gadget shop has a shedload of USB wossnames, including

USB Foot Warmers seem to be the winners in my shed..

USB Foot Warmers to the rescue - these slippers will warm one’s peripheries during marathon typing sessions. Simply plug them into a USB port for instant warmth and comfort.

This is an affiliated post, ie if you buy from the links I get some cash for the shedblog Xmas party!.

of course the more eco sheddie may frown on these sucking the electricity from your computer, but it is xmas(soon)

I am writing this sitting in the shed

Well Mrs Uncle wilco’s summerhouse, as the seats are more comfortable.

I finally bought one of those laptops, but in fact its a cheapy netbook, ultra portable, tiny ‘puter what ever you want to call it, from ALDI, called the Medion Akoya E1210.

It has a 10inch screen and the keyboard is about the same size, but the keys are easy to use even the glidey mouse pad is good after some practice.

It’s powered by the Intel Atom chip, ok its not a chip full of horse power but its not a donkey either, for web browsing, blogging, watching downloaded content from the BBC iplayer and general shed based wossname it’s great.

The main downside is the battery life, they say it should last 2 and a half hours but depends on what you do, you can buy a larger capacity battery, but i will have to wait for that, maybe the mrs will get it for my birthday?

overall i am very happy with it, using Google chrome and it speeds along for general transferring pictures from my phone (nokia n95) up to Flickr.

It’s supposed to be based on the msi wind but with a few exceptions, quality of webcam (which i don’t user) and no built in bluetooth (which I don’t miss).

anyway if you are thinking about getting a small laptop to blog from the shed, then it gets my thumbs up.

Are you a Lady sheddie who escapes to their shed

I have been emailed this request from Ruth, can any of you lady sheddies help?

I’m writing a feature for Red magazine and am looking for a woman (aged late 20s to early 40s) who loves to escape to her shed on Christmas Day for a bit of peace and quiet. If you know of anyone, please can you let me know asap.
I’d need to do a quick telephone interview, and we’d need to take a photo of them in their shed.

A birdhouse for your soul

I have a nice little beachhut birdhouse (nearly a shed) hanging from my shed, to try and attract our featherd friends to the garden (not much, luck thanks to next doors cats)

but I was reading my emails, and this popped into the wossname.

Caravan Birdhouse

This brilliant rustic birdhouse is a great gift for all you nature lovers, Bill Oddie types and full-on fans of ornithology, as it puts a humorous twist on a traditional garden accessory. But that wouldn’t be hard because most birdhouses are hideously twee eyesores that instantly give your garden that old biddy look. And you wouldn’t want that, would you?

No, what you want is this seriously ironic birdhouse shaped just like an old clapped out caravan. You know, the kind of thing you might see Bernard Bresslaw and Windsor Davies hanging out in circa ‘75.

If you fancy one you can buy it or the washing machine version from firebox.

Just Sheds Tuesday : Sarah’s Craft Shed

Another wonderful shed, oh sheddies you are spoiling me!

I had a little fear in the back of my shed, that we wont not out do Tony and his shed of Roman wonder, but the sheds you have been a sharing are a joy to behold.

This weeks pick from the wossnames is

Sarah’s Craft Shed & My Workshop

It’s a place for me to escape to, I use it to look after all my tools, motorcycle jackets, have a beer in, warm up and listen to my radio..Cool place to hang out in

I just love the customisation of this humble Garden shed, it shows the Sheddie Loves her/his shed, simple and slushy, but at the heart of the philosophy of this site.

More images after the click, But we would love to see more!

Shed week judge Trevor Baylis Q & A

trev_workshop.jpg

I recently ask Trevor some questions mostly shed related but of course some about his inventions.

His workshop sounds great, just got to get him to share it when he has time.

Q1) When did you first start inventing or making things?

A. When I was a child I could do the most amazing things with my Meccano but I couldn’t even write my name. I was five years old.

Q2) Did your workshop/shed play a major part in your ideas process?

A. Certainly – my workshop contains a multitude of machines, and is the graveyard of 1000 domestic appliances. I have a small tv, a computer should I need it, and of course a radio. And I can always sit down in a comfortable chair and smoke my pipe, and can always have a cup of tea when I want one.

Q3) What one bit of advice would you give to sheddie inventors?

A. Let your dreams be your inspiration, and a springboard for great actions.

Q4) You were Pipe Smoker of the Year a few years ago.. will you be coming up with a smoker’s device to get over the recent changes in the law?

A. Well, I certainly won’t be smoking outside my shed, but I might put a fan in the window.

Q5) With your eco self-powered inventions and green credentials before it was fashionable, do you feel the rest of the industry is playing catchup?

A. To an extent, yes! And I am very proud that they are.

Q6) What’s the future for shed-based inventors or do you see the demise of the one man in his workshop?

A. I believe those people who have sheds, studios, or laboratories, are the lucky ones. It is great for a man or a woman to have a retreat or somewhere to chill out and ferment. This will always be a necessity in life for people.

Q7) What would be your ultimate bolthole/shed-away-from-it-all and where would it be?

A. I wouldn’t want to walk down a garden to get to my retreat – mine is attached to my house. If I want to go into my studio in the night when I have that bright idea, I am able to do so without having to wear wellington boots. My studio has stunning views of the river, is cosy, and believe it or not – the floor has a carpet!!!

And to finish, some questions from sheddies:

Q: If your shed was on fire, what one thing would you save?
(From Alex from Shedworking.co.uk)

A. Undoubtedly, my first prototype wind-up radio, which also functions as a wind-up torch and mobile phone charger.

Q: Has your moustache ever got tangled up in one of those new fangled wind-up radios (From Chris)

A. My moustache never entwined with the machinery but a spark or two from my pipe could have easily given me a harelip, then I might have taken a turn for the nurse.

Many thanks Trevor.

You can read more about Trevor Baylis and his products over at http://www.trevorbaylisbrands.com/, which has some great advice for sheddie inventors and of course details of the products, Trev has been involved with.

It’s all gone a bit Celtish down the bay

Last night as it was valentines day, me and Mrs Uncle Wilco had an evening out at a jig, yes a jig not a gig.

We went to see Folk band Celtish, It’s not normally my cup of tea (but i do like Rock with roots), but you have to make wossnames for the other half.

celtish

Anyway I really enjoyed it (must be my age and folk jumpers and the Tull overtones), the Flute and the Fiddle player were brilliant and the rest of the band, a great singer with Stevie Nicks overtones, wonderful guitar man and the unique sound of the harp added to the tight group.

With the mix of contemporary folk and wossnames of standards, it really worked, the audience were very appreciative for the 2 or so hours and they sold OSB in bottles halftime, so result!

The surroundings helped, it was at the Norwegian Church down Cardiff Bay, a small venue but very suitable for this sort of thing.

I would definitely see them again, the banter with the audience worked well (apart from an odd women who kept shouting out stuff) , and event the Flutists young daughter shouting from the balcony added to the cozy and great night.
