Woman finds lorry driver living in her shed

This was reported all last week… so check your shed…

An Oxfordshire woman has told how a Lithuanian crane driver set up home in her garden shed - without her knowledge.

The man had installed home comforts including a bed, television and even a juicer in the shed at the bottom of an overgrown garden in Banbury, reports The Times.

He even tidied up the garden and Kelly Dudley, 25, assumed the figure in blue overalls had been sent by her landlord.

The truth dawned when she spotted him emerging from the shed on Sunday morning looking as though he had enjoyed a good night’s sleep.

She was astonished to discover a single bed, a chest of drawers, a camping stove, pots and pans, crockery and a shaving mirror. He had set up a television at the end of the bed, and laid a carpet on the floor.

Ms Dudley, who is on maternity leave with her six-month-old daughter, Chloe, did not know whether to be be amused or frightened.

She later found out that the migrant worker, known only as John, had sought refuge at the bottom of her garden after losing his job and being evicted from his home. He believed that the unlocked outhouse had been abandoned.

Ms Dudley said that the Lithuanian had offered to pay her rent and do her gardening if she would allow him to stay.

“If I did not have a six-month-old daughter, I might have considered it,” she said. “It is a funny story but also very frightening - he could have been anybody.”

PC Matt Locke said: “He thought the shed had been abandoned, so he moved in. He had even cleaned up the garden. He had not committed any criminal offences but we asked him to move on, which he did, willingly.”

I think I need one of these for Shed Week.

GARDEN IMPROVEMENTS ‘MAY INCREASE FLOOD RISK’

Britons spend more than £200 a year on their gardens, but some of the improvements carried out could increase the risk of their home flooding, an insurer warned today.
Homeowners have spent an average of £633 carrying out work in their gardens during the past three years, according to Direct Line.

Garden sheds are the most popular addition with 61% of people installing one, while 58% of people have added a patio and 51% have added outdoor seating.
Nearly a third of people have had a summer house built, 26% have added a water feature and 17% have taken the more drastic action of concreting over their front garden to create a drive.

But Direct Line warned that some of these improvements could be increasing the flood risk faced by properties.

In his interim report on last summer’s floods Sir Michael Pitt said laying impermeable surfaces, such as paved driveways and patios, could increase the amount of surface water run-off after rain, leading to flooding.

The Government is planning to introduce legislation later this year requiring homeowners to get planning permission if they want to lay impermeable surfaces.
Frances Browning, spokesperson for Direct Line, said: “Homeowners should be fully aware of the potential implications of their garden improvements and choose their development materials carefully.

“There are plenty of permeable paving materials now available which absorb water and so will not require planning permission once the Government changes the law.”
:: Opinium Research questioned 2,139 people during March.

Shocking shed death

The trumpet of truth reports on this horrible story..

AN ELDERLY man died of a heart attack in his beloved garden shed before falling on a gas heater and starting a fire which consumed the building.

Newport Coroner’s court heard how 77-year-old Frederick Brown, of St Gwladys Avenue, Bargoed would often spend most of his day in the shed at the bottom of his garden.

At 10.30am on December 9, 2007 Mr Brown’s grandson, who was visiting his grandparents, was on his way to give his granddad his morning paper when he noticed flames coming from inside the shed.

MILLIONS OF APPLIANCES DUMPED IN GARDENS

More than 26 million fridges, freezers and washing machines have been dumped in the past five years, often left to rot in gardens, new research showed today.

Fewer than two out of five people bothered to take their unwanted appliances to the local tip and most did not bother to see if they could have broken goods repaired.
Insurance firm Homeserve said its survey of 1,000 adults revealed that one in three people had disposed of an appliance which was still working just because they wanted to upgrade to a newer model.

Jon Florsheim, chief executive of Homeserve, said: “We believe our research shows that there is still a lot of work to be done around changing the mindset of people towards the recycling of their white goods - and indeed persuading people to at least attempt to repair these goods before adding to the white good waste mountain.

“The situation is compounded by the fact that many people are needlessly discarding white goods that are in working order or could be fixed by a qualified tradesman.”

HANDY HOMEOWNERS TURN TO DIY FOR PROFITS

Homeowners are turning to DIY to add value to their properties as the market flattens, according to research.

More than a quarter of homeowners (28%) are planning improvements specifically to add value to their properties over the next 12 months, Halifax said.

Almost half (44%) believe improvements will add up to £5,000 to the value of their property, with 12% believing the increase will be between £10,000 to £25,000.

The most popular home improvements are redecorating (71%), garden improvements (35%), new furnishings (33%), new carpets (25%), laminate or wood flooring (22%) and a new bathroom (21%).

Almost one in five (17%) have introduced energy efficiency measures into their homes.
Russell Galley, head of mainstream mortgages at Halifax, said: “In the current market, homeowners can inject value into their homes by undertaking the right home improvements.

“Carrying out work on your home can be rewarding but costly to correct if not executed properly. Where appropriate, consult the professionals and seek any necessary planning permission before getting started.”
