Sheds and the the environment
Shed of the year has been announced. Welcome Sheddie, this blog is about sheds! You can share your shed, or view other people's sheds. If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to our RSS feed.
This a post in support of Blog action dayYou may ask what have sheds got to do with helping the environment, as a lot of them are made from Wood
Well the shed industry is starting to green itself up.
Some wood used for sheds and garden furniture are harvested unsustainably – from ancient forests, which is bad, so look out for the following schemes Forest Stewardship Council (FSC US, UK) or Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes (PEFC), read more about these labels.
Of course a lot of sheddies are using reclaimed wood, this will not only save the energy to make from new but will help sustain the raw materials, and if you are handy then, you have a unique shed and it could win Shed of the Year!
One thing you can go to help is to create a green living roof for your shed, lots of great info here, and here. This promotes wildlife in your garden.
If you want to generate electricity for your shed, then you can always make a windturbine or solar panel.

I came across this post -Sheds and the the environment- and thought it was worth sharing. I hope you find it interesting too and take the time to read some of the other articles on their site. Some wood used for sheds and garden furniture are harvested unsustainably –
Today, as part of Blog Action Day, bloggers around the planet are writing on the issue of the environment as it relates to their own area of interest. Uncle Wilco has a piece on theShedblogabout sustainable wood, green roofs, and renewable energy so I’d just like to put in a good green word for shedworking in terms of how it cuts out commuting and thus is carbon footprint-friendly. And if you’re really keen on zero carbon construction,
And some of us have sheds that are not made of wood at all. My workshop is an old stone-built steading while the wood that’s used within it for benches and shelving is all salvaged. In fact, most of my tools are salvaged too. Being skint is a great way of being green.
Nice blog and I’ll have to return now and again.
