A child’s tree house could be for the chop after planners ruled it should never have been built in the first place.
Mr Sharples decided to build his daughter a tree house in the garden’s fully-grown ash he was actually sowing the seeds of future strife.

His idyllic rural home sits within Pembrokeshire Coast National Park.

Mr Sharples was at pains to ensure the hexagonal tree house did not damage the ash by using cables to fix it in place, instead of nails.

But the carefully constructed structure had to be halted when a stunned Mr Sharples was informed he had not sought permission.

Now he has vowed to fight for the right to keep it after coastal park planners rejected a retrospective application.

“To be honest I just thought it was a bit of fun. You should be allowed to have a bit of fun in this day and age,” said Mr Sharples today.

“When I was a boy my dad built me a tree house and I loved it. I used to sleep up there in the summer. It was fantastic.”

A 20-year-old north Shropshire man was left with facial burns today after the shed he entered to go to sleep burst into flames when he lit a cigarette.

Firefighters said the shed was being used to store butane gas cylinders and a barbecue, which could have caused the explosion when the man used his lighter.

The victim is believed to have been staying in the garden shed at his mother’s house in George Street, Whitchurch, because he was locked out.

He was also left suffering from shock and had burns to hands, firefighters said

Mike Beach, crew manager at Whitchurch Fire Station, said: “The young man was sleeping in a shed where lots of equipment including a barbecue and butane gas cylinder were being stored.

“It’s possible the gas cylinder valve was partially open when he went to light his cigarette causing a flash explosion which set the shed on fire. It burned his face and hands and he said his injuries were stinging very badly.

“When we arrived the victim was trying to put out the fire with his neighbour’s hosepipe.”

The Doctor without his time-travelling police box is difficult to imagine, but its creators initially proposed he journey through space in an invisible machine covered in light-resistant paint.

When BBC producers were devising the show in the early 1960s, they thought viewers should see no machine at all, only “a shape of nothingness”.

The BBC’s head of drama Sydney Newman, who commissioned the first series, insisted an invisible machine would not work and the doctor’s vehicle should be a strong visual symbol.

Wisely, writers also said a transparent, plastic bubble would be “lowgrade”. But a seed of the Tardis idea is sown when they suggest using “some common object in the street” like a night-watchman’s shelter.

Selfbuild or off the shelf shed?

Our office shed was built by my husband, Craig on site, with a bit of my help hanging the ceiling. It’s a very traditional design that was preapproved by the local historic preservation design review board.

Why have you got a shed? uses etc

The 10×14 shed allowed us to move our home office out of the house. This allowed our children to have separate bedrooms, but more importantly gave me just enough distance from my work that I wasn’t as distracted during family time by projects. It also gave my husband an escape-to spot for watching sporting events (although we always managed to find him).

How would you describe your shed?

Our shed was designed to complement our 1923 Craftsman bungalow. We used a gable roof with exposed rafter tails, and gable end brackets and vents along with cedar siding to match the main house. The interior was finished with simple painted board and batten on the walls and cathedral ceiling and finished wood floors. The shed was wired for electricity, cable and internet and we used a window unit AC to heat and cool the small space.

Who are your shed inspirations?

We are in the historic preservation design-build business so look at a lot of historic garages and outbuildings, both existing and in photographs in our work. The buildings tend to be simple but have elegant proportions.

Future Shed plans

We found our shed so useful and it became such an attractive focal point in our yard that we started a shed design-build company called Historic Shed, creating custom designs that complement historic Florida homes. (www.HistoricShed.com)

How did you find out about our community?

As part of our business expansion planning, we did a lot of internet research and came across this website. I have to say that it helped us feel like we were on the right track with our shed building idea to see so many shed advocates/ fanatics!

It must be every gaming fanatic’s dream – a private arcade where you can step straight into the cockpit of a Star Wars X-Wing fighter.

But for gamer Shaun Meldon, it’s no dream. The 39-year-old has created his own video game sanctuary with more than 50 classic arcade games.

The converted barn houses original versions of Breakout, a 1978 bat-and-ball game, its successor Pong and, of course, the mock-up X-Wing – and they are all stuck on freeplay.

‘I suppose it really is a hobby that has got out of control but these machines need saving – they are part of our heritage,’ he said. The fanatic started playing in arcades as a child and bought his first ‘cabinet’ in 1995.

‘It was called Robotron and basically it was an old-fashioned shoot-em-up game.

‘My other half, Dawn, was not too happy about it because at the time we were living in a one-bedroom flat,’ he said.

I would love an xbox360 in my shed, but mrs uncle wilco would prefer a new sofa

Selfbuild or off the shelf shed?

Off the peg, I’m afraid and considering my past life as a cabinetmaker that’s a bit of a disgraceful admission. It was a wedding present from my Mum and Dad when Susie and I got married in 1997.

Why have you got a shed? uses etc

It’s a place for me to work away from the house. In ‘97 there were four of us in a small end-of-terrace house. I was writing my PhD at the time, and also had music to write and teaching to plan, so I desperately needed a quiet, deatched place to get on with all that stuff. A shed at the top of the garden was the ideal solution.

In late 2005 I had the idea for an online business selling Westcountry cheese. Almost as soon as I had the idea, I also had the name. It just had to be The Cheese Shed, which appealed to me on a quirky level, but was also true, as the business really IS run from a shed just like the one in our logo (which I drew with a felt pen on the kitchen table).

Mind you, I always have to quickly point out that there’s no actual cheese in the shed (apart from my lunch): that’s all kept nice and chilled elsewhere.

How would you describe your shed?

It’s basically a fairly straightforward 12 x 8 garden shed. However, one of the very ordinary windows has been replaced by a beautiful traditional farmhouse window (left over from another project). It’s also fully insulated and boarded out with T&G inside and suprisingly smart. had to improve things when the TV came last year - Gary Rhodes’ ‘Local Food Hero’ on UKTV.

We didn’t win by Gary said I was “a different kind of hero”. I think that’s good. It is, isn’t it?

Who are your shed inspirations?

We were on holiday on the Isle of Harris last year, which has picturesquely shabby sheds at every turn. It must truly be the Shed Capital of Britain, and encourages me to keep the shed down-to-earth, as well as reminding me that corrugated iron is the thing to aspire to.

Future Shed plans

Mmm. Well, if the business keeps on growing then I might outgrow this shed. But I’d have to move to a bigger shed, wouldn’t I?

I mean a business with a name like the The Cheese Shed can’t be rn from an industrial unit, can it?

How did you find out about our community?
That is a very good question. Surely Readers Shed has ALWAYS existed, hasn’t it?
