Shed of the year 2010 judge: Lloyd Alter

I welcome back Lloyd Alter as a judge for Shed of the year 2010.

lloydsmile400

Lloyd is senior writer for Treehugger.com and has written for Azure Magazine, Inhabitat, the Huffington Post and Planet Green. He teaches sustainable design at Ryerson University School of Interior Design, and is President of the Architectural Conservancy of Ontario.

In the course of his earlier work as an architect and a real estate developer, Lloyd became convinced that we just use too much of everything- too much space, too much land, too much food, too much fuel, too much money, and that the key to sustainability is to simply use less. And, the key to happily using less is to design things better.

“That’s why I love sheds so much, they are such a great demonstration about how to do more with less, to make small spaces work well, and to experiment. And why Shed Week is so remarkable; to see such an explosion of creativity from such a broad spectrum of people, truly Architecture without Architects, as Rudofsky called it.”

He joins our other great shed judges – now all we need is you to a add shedload of more great sheds to join the great ones so far.

Shed of the year judge 2010 : Debra Prinzing

I am very happy to say that my shed friend Debra Prinzing has signed up as a judge for next years Shed of the year competition, Debra is not only a great writer (About sheds!) she once called me the bad boy of sheds.. so thats good enough in my books.

This is what Debra said about shedweek and the opportunities

As an outdoor living expert, I am drawn to the intersection of architecture and horticulture; as an observer and a design writer, I watch and interpret how human beings interact with their built environment, and in the larger context, with nature. So it’s no surprise that to me, a “shed” is a tiny building with a big impact on our lives.

These diminutive structures satisfy all our longings for place, sanctuary, creativity and shelter. I’m honored for the chance to participate in SHED WEEK as an international judge and hope that my involvement will help expand and promote shed-ownership and this event in North America.

Debra is a Los Angeles-based outdoor living expert who writes and lectures on gardens and home design. She has a background in textiles, journalism, landscape design and horticulture.

A frequent speaker for botanical garden, horticultural society and flower show audiences, Debra is also a regular radio and television guest.

She is the creator of www.shedstyle.com, a design blog.

Her five books include award-winning Stylish Sheds and Elegant Hideaways (Clarkson-Potter/Random House, 2008), The Abundant Garden (2005), and Pacific Northwest Garden Survival Guide (2004).

Debra’s feature stories appear in the Los Angeles Times’ Home section and top shelter and consumer publications, including Garden Design, Fine Gardening, Cottages & Bungalows, Metropolitan Home, Landscape Architecture, among others.

She is also an associate with Lifestyle Insights, a group of savvy professionals who develop new-media content to help corporations communicate with women consumers.

I hope you will welcome be Debra to the Shed Week fold and her stylish views on sheds will prove a great asset to our shed judges arsenal.

Of course if you are an Stylish Sheddie with an even posher shed then Share yours for Shed of the year 2010.

Shed of the year 2010 judge : Alex Johnson – shedworking

I’m happy to announce that Shed ladies favorite and good guy of sheds, Alex is back as a judge, he is a good friend, a confident on shed matters and a nice bloke who’s pretty hot at snooker (so I am told)

I will be finally be meeting him (oh the joy of online world!) this November at the enterprise national conference, he owes me a cider anyway (or is it the other way round)

This is what he says about National Shed Week

National Shed Week is about a lot more than a roof and four (fairly waterproof) walls – it’s a celebration of invention, creativity and community.

But it’s also a perfect example of how social media can be used to bring together people from around the planet who share common interests. And this year, I believe NSW will underline its growing importance as it helps to campaign to save the internationally famous Bletchley Park huts.

as Alex notes Bletchley Park is the official charity for Shed Week, I know I go on about it, but it’s important, probably the most famous Huts in the world still need your help!

A bit about the man himself.

I’m the founder, editor and trainee tea boy at Shedworking.co.uk (Shedworking: The Alternative Workplace Revolution will be published by Frances Lincoln in June 2010).

When I’m not writing about garden offices, I’m a freelance journalist, part of the online team for The Independent, webmaster for Designerbreakfasts.com, regular contributor to Enterprisenation.com and editorial consultant for various national charities. I also blog about bookshelves at Bookshelf and about creative optimism at Thriving Too.

Having moved house recently, I’m currently ‘between garden offices’ and temporarily a cellarworker, but should be back shedworking in 2010.

Sarah-Beeny-in-hard-hat

We all welcome the Beeny again. It’s her 4th year as a judge. She has supported us from the beginning and gives her enthusiasm to the sheddies when it comes to picking the winning sheds.

She said this of 2009 Shed of the Year: ‘The shed quality gets better and better each year – it seems more and more people are embracing the joy of sheds!’

A little about Sarah, if you did not know already:

“Sarah Beeny is a Channel 4 television presenter on the popular Property Snakes and Ladders prime time show. As well as being a well established property mogul Sarah also owns mysinglefriend.com, a social dating website and has recently launched Tepilo.com, a property website to enable you to sell your own property online for free.”

We would also like to give our best to Sarah who is pregnant with her fourth child as we write, congrats Beeny.

You can follow Sarah on Twitter and Facebook

If you would like to Share your shed and have it judge by the Beeny amongst others then you can add it on readersheds.co.uk
