Just Sheds Tuesday : Sarah’s Craft Shed

Shed of the year has been announced. Welcome Sheddie, this blog is about sheds! You can share your shed, or view other people's sheds. If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to our RSS feed.

Another wonderful shed, oh sheddies you are spoiling me!

I had a little fear in the back of my shed, that we wont not out do Tony and his shed of Roman wonder, but the sheds you have been a sharing are a joy to behold.

This weeks pick from the wossnames is

Sarah’s Craft Shed & My Workshop

It’s a place for me to escape to, I use it to look after all my tools, motorcycle jackets, have a beer in, warm up and listen to my radio..Cool place to hang out in

I just love the customisation of this humble Garden shed, it shows the Sheddie Loves her/his shed, simple and slushy, but at the heart of the philosophy of this site.

no hippies

More images after the click, But we would love to see more!

Shed week judge Trevor Baylis Q & A

trev_workshop.jpg

I recently ask Trevor some questions mostly shed related but of course some about his inventions.

His workshop sounds great, just got to get him to share it when he has time.

Q1) When did you first start inventing or making things?

A. When I was a child I could do the most amazing things with my Meccano but I couldn’t even write my name. I was five years old.

Q2) Did your workshop/shed play a major part in your ideas process?

A. Certainly – my workshop contains a multitude of machines, and is the graveyard of 1000 domestic appliances. I have a small tv, a computer should I need it, and of course a radio. And I can always sit down in a comfortable chair and smoke my pipe, and can always have a cup of tea when I want one.

Q3) What one bit of advice would you give to sheddie inventors?

A. Let your dreams be your inspiration, and a springboard for great actions.

Q4) You were Pipe Smoker of the Year a few years ago.. will you be coming up with a smoker’s device to get over the recent changes in the law?

A. Well, I certainly won’t be smoking outside my shed, but I might put a fan in the window.

Q5) With your eco self-powered inventions and green credentials before it was fashionable, do you feel the rest of the industry is playing catchup?

A. To an extent, yes! And I am very proud that they are.

Q6) What’s the future for shed-based inventors or do you see the demise of the one man in his workshop?

A. I believe those people who have sheds, studios, or laboratories, are the lucky ones. It is great for a man or a woman to have a retreat or somewhere to chill out and ferment. This will always be a necessity in life for people.

Q7) What would be your ultimate bolthole/shed-away-from-it-all and where would it be?

A. I wouldn’t want to walk down a garden to get to my retreat – mine is attached to my house. If I want to go into my studio in the night when I have that bright idea, I am able to do so without having to wear wellington boots. My studio has stunning views of the river, is cosy, and believe it or not – the floor has a carpet!!!

And to finish, some questions from sheddies:

Q: If your shed was on fire, what one thing would you save?
(From Alex from Shedworking.co.uk)

A. Undoubtedly, my first prototype wind-up radio, which also functions as a wind-up torch and mobile phone charger.

Q: Has your moustache ever got tangled up in one of those new fangled wind-up radios (From Chris)

A. My moustache never entwined with the machinery but a spark or two from my pipe could have easily given me a harelip, then I might have taken a turn for the nurse.

Many thanks Trevor.

You can read more about Trevor Baylis and his products over at http://www.trevorbaylisbrands.com/, which has some great advice for sheddie inventors and of course details of the products, Trev has been involved with.

It’s all gone a bit Celtish down the bay

Last night as it was valentines day, me and Mrs Uncle Wilco had an evening out at a jig, yes a jig not a gig.

We went to see Folk band Celtish, It’s not normally my cup of tea (but i do like Rock with roots), but you have to make wossnames for the other half.

celtish

Anyway I really enjoyed it (must be my age and folk jumpers and the Tull overtones), the Flute and the Fiddle player were brilliant and the rest of the band, a great singer with Stevie Nicks overtones, wonderful guitar man and the unique sound of the harp added to the tight group.

With the mix of contemporary folk and wossnames of standards, it really worked, the audience were very appreciative for the 2 or so hours and they sold OSB in bottles halftime, so result!

The surroundings helped, it was at the Norwegian Church down Cardiff Bay, a small venue but very suitable for this sort of thing.

I would definitely see them again, the banter with the audience worked well (apart from an odd women who kept shouting out stuff) , and event the Flutists young daughter shouting from the balcony added to the cozy and great night.

Shed as art - I know what I like

copyright JULIAN PERRY - Austin Desmond Fine artThe times reports about artist Julian Perry, who likes to paint sheds, and not in the way we know.

Perry has focused on an area of allotments within the Olympic site, painting its collection of ramshackle sheds as his response to the shiny spaceship of corporate sport that is to land on his stomping ground.

Perry has lovingly rendered each shed’s peeling paint, rust and baggy asphalt in oils, and, to emphasise their difference from what is to come, he has uncharacteristically isolated them against a plain background.

Not sure how much they cost, but would be a shame to put them up in the shed.

He has a show on

Sheds and the the environment

This a post in support of  Blog action day

You may ask what have sheds got to do with helping the  environment, as a lot of them are made from Wood

Well the shed industry is starting to green itself up.

Some wood used for sheds and garden furniture are harvested unsustainably – from ancient forests, which is bad, so look out for the following schemes Forest Stewardship Council (FSC US, UK) or Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes (PEFC), read more about these labels.

Of course a lot of sheddies are using reclaimed wood, this will not only save the energy to make from new but will help sustain the raw materials, and if you are handy then, you have a unique shed and it could win Shed of the Year!

One thing you can go to help is to create a green living roof for your shed, lots of great info here, and here. This promotes wildlife in your garden.

If you want to generate electricity for your shed, then you can always make a windturbine or solar panel.

Great Solar panelled shed

Ken over at sustburbia has a great workshop with the biggest Solar panel to felt ratio I have ever seen. I hope the sheddie shares his green shed soon.

Sheddies has has 20,000 records in his shed

The Yorkshire post reports on a sheddie, David Patmore, who has a collection of Classical albums

He’s obsessed with classical conductors and has 20,000 records in his shed .

The shed, in the garden of Patmore’s Sheffield home, is piled high with records: shelf after shelf of LPs or “vinyl” as they’re now more modishly called.

Fin is a Rock and Shed Star

Had some good response from the Ukulele Sheddie Fin from youtube from everyone I have shown it to.

Well here’s his latest one a Buzzin cover of Oasis Rock and Roll Star

Maybe we can make requests -I would like any song by Black Sabbath

I have emailed him and hopefully he’s going to share his shed soon.

Happy shedday shedworking.co.uk

image copyright http://www.felixbennett.com/Alex is one today, well his top class shedworking blog is.

We at readersheds.co.uk and shedblog (ie me) wish Alex and his blog a happy wossname and look forward to the book of the blog soon (hint a free copy would be nice great!)

Who would have thought there was room for a serious blog about sheds and working on the interweb, when you have this badly written and irrelevant shedblog here, but Alex being the professional he is, has cornered the higher brow section of the shedworld, and it’s a great read.
We are very proud to be associated with shedworking and thank him for his support of Shed Week etc.. etc etc.. etc… but are jealous of his subscribers :(
Look out for the official(ie when I posted more than twice a month) shedblog.co.uk 1st birthday very soon…

I hope he does not mind I have nicked his great number one shed image.. but it’s so good… maybe Iam the number 2’s of shedbased blogs?

The artist wot done it is here.

Save this treehouse

Its a shed in the trees as far as I’m concerned.

but they are having some issues with the planning bods.. look at the petition or their website.

A number of Young people have been working on a project, building a Tree House on privately owned land as a constructive and enjoyable thing to do. It has been made entirely out of recycled materials. The council are now trying to remove it because the bureaucracy surrounding planning. This is not a “development” it is just a tree house.

Massive mechanical hands!

Useful!, originally uploaded by oskay.

make to the rescue, with this amazing device that would look at home in many a sheddies tool shop.

The site they are from has some amazing projects for you to give  agood shed go with.
