Shopkeeper Jack Yaffe has just celebrated his 100th birthday – and he has no plans to retire.

The great-grandfather opened his hardware store 75 years ago and has lived above it ever since.

He said: ‘I still direct the business and will keep on doing so.’ Jack’s only son, Geoffrey, died ten years ago but his daughter-in-law Evelyn has worked in the business, in Prestwich, Manchester, for 40 years.

She said: ‘He knows most of his customers – many have been coming for years.

He suffers with his sight but he’s still offering joinery advice and beating off competition from the supermarkets.

He’s got a strong constitution and he’s fastidious about the business.’
