Milford-on-Sea Beach huts plunge into a 10ft crater

Shed of the year has been announced. Welcome Sheddie, this blog is about sheds! You can share your shed, or view other people's sheds. If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to our RSS feed.

According to Bournemouth Echo

SEVERAL beach huts collapsed into a ten-foot crater which opened up along a New Forest seafront.

The huts in Milford-on-Sea fell into a large hole below the concrete walkway just two days before emergency works were due to start at the seaside spot.

New Forest District Council was due to start work on the weakened sea wall yesterday after a groyne closest to the Whitehouse on Hurst Road collapsed on Tuesday last week.

But Mother Nature proved to be more powerful and after a high tide on Saturday night coupled with extreme wave overtopping, the beach huts at the end of the row close to the Whitehouse fell into a large void below them the following morning.

Steve Cook, coastal engineer at New Forest District Council, said: “We are bringing in two tonnes of shingle and rock to protect the wall and raise the level of the beach to prevent the structure being battered any further. There will be an investigation to assess the concrete structure once the area has been made safe.”

thanks to Tim for the headsup.

Auctioneer finds homemade grenade in shed

An auctioneer inadvertently triggered a full-scale police alert when he unearthed a hand grenade in a garden shed.

Charles Hanson, of Hansons Auctioneers in Lichfield, had been instructed to clear the home of Mary Craddock in Lichfield Road, Brownhills, following her death earlier this year at the age of 94.

Mrs Craddock had shared the home with her sister Ann Seedhouse until she died four years ago aged 92.

As he was rifling through an old chest of tools in the garden shed, Mr Hanson spied the grenade - thought to date back to the First World War - nestling in the corner.

Family use same beach hut for 50 years

The Bournmouth Echo reports

FOR almost half a century the Cotterills have been packing their buckets and spades and heading for Bournemouth beach.

Every summer the family book the same beach hut and stay in the same bed and breakfast in Alum Chine, keeping up an August bank holiday tradition started by grandparents Maureen, 73, and Charlie, 82.

Come rain or shine, the family of eight travel to the Dorset coast from Stoke on Trent for their annual summer getaway.

Shedman on Radio 4 tonight

Shedman, John Davies emailed me to say

Mark Lawson interviewed my alter ego Shedman as part of a feature on creative sheds, which will be broadcast on BBC Radio 4, Wednesday 27th August, at 7.15 pm in the usual Front Row slot.

I will be listening, will you?

Evacuation after chemicals found in brum shed

The birmingpost reports

FAMILIES were evacuated from their Birmingham homes after a huge stash of explosive chemicals was discovered inside a blazing shed.

Fire crews woke 100 sleeping people from their beds at homes in Longbridge at 4.30am yesterday after the fire.

An industrial tank of acetylene gas, used for welding, was being stored alongside two huge drums of diesel in a metal-clad outhouse on Thurlestone Road.

Northfield Fire Station commander Andy Simmonds said: “Acetylene is dangerous and unpredictable when subjected to any heat and has the potential to go off like a bomb.

“Potentially it can be catastrophic so we put out emergency procedures into action.

“It’s a chemical which should never be stored in a domestic property so we were concerned to find such a large cylinder alongside two 45-litre drums of fuel. We will be talking to the homeowner and giving him some advice.”

So a warning for sheddies looking to use these chemicals, and a worry for potential shed burnage.

Tomorrow’s world making a comback?

The daily record reports that the BBC TV show which featured Shed of the year judge Trevor baylis and his great windup radio is coming back

BBC One’s controller has revealed the science show - which ran from 1965 to 2003 and was fronted by Raymond Baxter, Judith Hann and Michael Rodd, among others - is set to return.

Jay Hunt said the rebranded version would be “Tomorrow’s World with a different name”.

They also give a list of the great and not so good inventions that featured on the show.

some of the bad include.

THE FLOATING BICYCLE

Antonio Bonjono’s 1975 idea was aimed at London commuters who would take to the Thames. The dodgy idea sank without trace.

WORMS FOR DINNER

The 1981 idea that protein-rich worms would become a staple food was to no one’s taste.

THE SHEEP-SHEARING ROBOT

Eyebrows, not interest, were raised among farmers after this alarming 1984 device was shown to the world.

Hopefully the modern day shedbased inventors out there will now get a good platform for showing off their creations.

Great “3d Shed” on PhotoSynth

Sheddie Rick has created a wondeful 3d tour of his Potting Shed using the great MS photosynth tool.

This is the potting shed I built in our back yard. You can tour around the shed or go in through the front door to see the interior, which is full of neat gardening tools.

To take this synth, I first walked around the shed, then walked up to the front door, opened it, and stepped into the middle so that I could get a good multi-lelvel (spiral) panorama.

unfortuntley it only works on windows and you need to download a plugin.

Shed on Wheels 100 years old

The BBC reports

An Edwardian holiday home is marking its centenary at a motor museum, which claims it could be the world’s oldest caravan designed to be pulled by a car.

The wooden caravan was built in 1908 by a Derbyshire-based artist, and has been described as a “shed on wheels”.

The single-berth van, last used in 1960, is on loan to the Motor Museum in Llangollen, Denbighshire.

Ironically I drove past the Motor Museum last week, but Mrs Uncle Wilco said it was not worth going in, and shes a local, so it does sum up different priortys, seeing a 100 year old shed on wheels or going on the canal(which was enjoyable) we could have done both!

Shed blaze sets off fireworks

So dont store your fireforks in your shed, simple.

The teletex reports

More than 40 firefighters tackling a blaze at a breakers yard near Sittingbourne withdrew when fireworks stored inside a shed exploded.

Eight crews were sent to Bobbing after reports that a shed was on fire, and found a building containing 200 tyres and engine parts was also alight.

The building was badly damaged and the shed and some fencing were destroyed.

Just Sheds - Photo group

Just a reminder that you can continue adding your shed photos to our Flickr Group, of course if it’s your own shed and not one you just saw out and a bout you can share it on readersheds.co.uk

We have had some great ones added recently and quite a lot of beachhuts which is wonderful.
