Planting a green roof on your shed

The guardian has a nice article about putting a Green growing roof on your shed.

they give some quick tips as well

HOW TO BUILD A GREEN ROOF FOR A SHED

1 Lay a waterproof membrane on the roof. This can be a pond liner or damp-proof membrane. Old compost bags can be used if you’re not too fussy about a leak or two.

2 Construct a frame to prevent the green roof from slipping.

3 Next, put in a drainage layer, so excess water can run off (it’s debatable whether you need this on a small project). Ideally, this should be a lightweight material such as clay granules from the garden centre.

4 Above the drainage layer, you need a moisture-retention mat to help the plants through hard times. If you are fitting sedum matting, this can be supplied with the plants. Where the substrate is deeper than 80mm, however, this might not be necessary because the growing medium will hold some moisture. Another DIY option is to use old towels, in which case it is advisable to put underneath them a geotextile membrane of the sort you lay beneath paths. This will let water drain through but prevent soil from above seeping into it.

5 Next up, the substrate – the medium in which the plants will grow. This varies in make-up, as well as in depth – 30mm-150mm, depending on what you want to plant.

6 Happy planting.

shame they don’t show the pictures online so you can get a feel for how to do it.

but this site has plans and pictures and tells you everything you need to know, shed link of the week I think.
